Metal-ceramic crowns
This look combines the durability of metal and the natural look of porcelain, and can even be matched to the color of natural teeth. Despite its durability, there are some drawbacks. The porcelain coating can chip off over time, exposing the metal underneath. Darkening of the gums in the cervical area is possible. The main advantage over ceramic and zirconia crowns is the lower cost.
Zirconium crowns
Zirconia has been used for more than 20 years in dentistry, and has been an increasingly preferred restorative material over the past 10 years due to its strength, aesthetics and biocompatibility. Although it is white, light and it is possible to ”dress” it in ceramic, it should still be noted that it has a lower transparency than enamel. For this reason, pure ceramic is the material of choice for restoring anterior teeth and zirconia for posterior teeth.
All-ceramic or porcelain crowns
They mimic the natural appearance of tooth enamel more than any other type of crown and are extremely suitable for restoring front teeth. Minimal filing of the natural tooth is required, they are non-allergenic and do not change colour over time.
The maintenance of dental crowns is no different from the usual oral care.
