What is pin building?
Pin building involves the use of a pin (post) and composite or other material to restore the lost tooth structure. It is placed in the root canal of a tooth that has been previously prepared and filled after root canal treatment. The new tooth structure is then built around it.
Materials for pin construction
- Metal Pins: Traditionally used for their strength and durability. They can be made of different metals such as titanium or gold.
- Fiberoptic pins: Made of materials such as fiberglass or carbon fiber, which are more flexible and biocompatible. They have better aesthetics and are preferred for anterior teeth.
- Ceramic Pins: Provide excellent aesthetics and are corrosion resistant. However, they are more fragile than metal ones.
